Natalia Tomiyama, NÜWIEL

What was the appeal for you to join in at 040x040 and talk to us?

NÜWIEL was selected for the first IKEA Bootcamp last year and was commuting to its headquarter in Älmhult every week for 3 months, each time crossing Malmö on the way. So a natural connection to Sweden has developed. Not only could we learn about IKEA from inside but also better understand its way of working and Swedish culture. That’s why we were excited to share our experience as a German startup in Sweden and contribute to the exchange between Hamburg and Malmö through the 040x040.

What potential do you see in this form of cultural exchange?

I think it is a fantastic idea to establish a bridge between two urban hubs. Both cities tackle urbanization and climate change issues from industrial as well startup perspectives at the moment. This type of events can be an opportunity to learn from each other, to collaborate and to expand the network.

What do you think could take an event like 040x040 to the next level?

I loved a friendly and cozy atmosphere of the event. However, a slightly more heterogeneous public would have added up even more to the exchange.

What was the appeal for you to join in at 040x040 and talk to our group?

At the CityScienceLab we research the tension field between digitalisation, urban development and society. We are interested in expanding our network into the Baltic region and connecting to local entrepreneurial and academic partners to exchange research results and deliver the positive impact to society beyond the borders of Hamburg. The axis of Malmö-Hamburg is very interesting for us because there is a lot that we can learn and we feel instantly connected with Malmö's people and culture.

What potential do you see in this form of cultural exchange?

It's important to experience and interact with people on a personal level. Only like this you create a valuable and lasting relationship that is truly meaningful. The warm atmosphere of 040x040 makes people share what really matters to them. And this is key to long-term success and satisfaction.

What do you think could take an event like 040x040 to the next level?

Using the possibilities of the digital generation and create a lively community sharing content and online events throughout the year. Launch little satellites that follow-up ideas and feed their stories back to the network. And connecting to existing communities to boost the flow of ideas and resources.

What was the appeal for you to join in at 040x040 and talk to our group? The principal at out school wants us to work more close to the real life out there. She wants our pupils to get connected with real businesses instead of only learning about reality through theory only. 040x040 sounded like an interesting idea so he applied. What potential do you see in this form of cultural exchange? Since it is two different nationalities that are spending time together and doing different activities, I would almost say that the cultural exchanges are limitless depending on what the participants are talking about with eachother. They can exchange different work experiences, what you need to think of in your home countries when your advertising a product etc. What do you think could take an event like 040x040 to the next level? Instead of just going to different company presentations I think you should also focus on different workshops so the participants can get to know eachother and at the same time focus on cooperations at the same time. Let the participants "brain storm" different ideas with eachother so that their cooperation becomes closer and the feeling of belonging to a group who can work over nations becomes stronger. ____ About Filip Teacher at Skanör Falstero Montessori School . I work as a teacher in Swedish and history, and both languages and history are two of my greatest interests in life. Before I became a teacher I worked as a tourist guide and in that line of work I realized that I wanted to continue to work both with history and especially with people. I love to challenge myself and others to develop as individuals, and then be able to open themselves up for new perspectives on things. For me, it is important that the school doesn’t become an isolated and obsolete place that is cut off from reality. Instead the school should be a meeting place where young people are coming in contact with reality in different forms, not just from the curriculum but from the world outside of the school.

What was the appeal for you to join in at 040x040 and meet us at the Elbphilharmonie?

It was a true success and a great experience for both the Malmö orchestra who played at the Elbphilharmonie in the evening and myself. I think that the 040x040 network has a strong potential since it is content-driven by its people and not an ordinary business meeting. I met with Matthias Weber and Martin Thörnkvist in November 2017 and immediately felt that a collaboration had a potential to create something out of the ordinary. In the talks at the Elbphilharmonie I felt that the participants from 040x040 showed a true interest in our topics. I felt sorry that we didn’t have more time for a deeper conversation around arts, culture and innovation.

What potential do you see in this form of cultural exchange?

I think that leaders of big artistic institutions could benefit a lot from meetings with creative innovators from different city sectors and vice versa. The world of the performing arts has the most conservative and the most innovative atmosphere at the same time and it is always a struggle to navigate between the two of them.

What do you think could take an event like 040x040 to the next level?

I think that it would be very interesting to have a seminar for decision makers from Hamburg and Malmö hosted by 040x040 were they share experiences and discuss the collaboration between the cities from new perspectives.
